Understanding CSS positioning

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I just discovered this fine article series on CSS positioning via del.icio.us. It should be a good read for everyone interested in the subject, from total CSS newbies to people that has a great understanding of CSS already.

  • Part 1 - Covers “display” and “position”
  • Part 2 - Covers more “display”, “overflow” and “float/clear”
  • Part 3 - some CSS3 stuff…

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Torsdag 24. april 2008 kl 19,
Auditorium PI, Autogården (Matematisk institutt),
Johannes Bruns gate 12, Bergen

How to make wordpress easy upgradeable

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The first thing I have to say about this is keep your worpress up to date at all times! Skipping a release will not only make you vulnerable to hackers, but also make it more difficult to upgrade later. But this, of course is something you already know, lets see what we could do to make it easier to manage this.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a distribution system for wordpress?
Actually, you have! You can use Subversion to install wordpress, and upgrading later is as easy as just switching repositories, if you follow static versions, or svn update if you install from trunk.

This makes upgrades a 4 step procedure (you can cut it down to 2 if you like to live risky, or if you don’t use custom plugins):

  • Disable all plugins
  • run svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.5/
  • go to your wp-admin, and update database (one click operation)
  • Enable your plugins again

As mentioned, you may skip the first and the last point.

See wordpress.org for more info, on how to switch from a tarball installed wordpress to a svn-installed wordpress, or performing a fresh install from svn.

Upgrading Wordpress to 2.5

Monday, March 31st, 2008

According to Stuart Herbert, if you use the advanced TinyMCE editor instead of the builtin wysiwyg editor, disable it before upgrading. Its not compatible with 2.5 (yet).

On the other hand, always disable all plugins before upgrading, and enable them one by one afterwards.

And, Bjørge, I will get back to what I did to make WP-upgrading easy soon.

Upgraded wordpress again

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

This time from 2.3.3 to 2.5 using subversion. It was dead easy! Though I find the user interface a bit confusing, I’m very happy to have found a way to keep the blog up-to-date in an easy way.

Just had to test the image upload suport

It is very cool to be able to manage photos and galleries inside wordpress too :)

BLUGplakat

Friday, March 28th, 2008

malen finner du her.

If you change one color, change ‘em all

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I changed to a dark GUI theme today, which has white text on dark gray background. It looks rather smashing. Then. I decided to check my gmail, which was impossible, because google sets their background color to white and/or light blue, but they don’t set the front color. That means that gmail renders with white text on a white (or light) background, and is completely unreadable.

The same thing applies to my blog here, and it will be fixed. However, I can’t do anything with google, besides using some greasemonkey scripts.

And I really thought google knew this stuff. I’m a bit ashamed mysef for not having this correct here. It has always been a good rule to always change all colors if you change one color.

Webdesigners

Tuesday, September 28th, 2004

Where does webdesigners get the idea that light grey text, with 9px size on white background is a good idea. OK. It looks nice, but isnt readable at all.

Hello! my fellow webdesigners! Wake up! It is not a good idea!

More hot widgets

Friday, September 17th, 2004

Kevin Gerich have released another set of nice widgets for Mozilla. It is a continued version of the last set, wich now also has radio-buttons and checkboxes in mac-style.

If you have a mac, grab them at his blog

I have made a modified version of the previous set of widgets for Linux, and I will try to make a linux-set of these too, and publish them here (if I’m allowed to to so)
